Where carbon is priced and traded, and which African projects earn credible
credits.
Compliance schemes, African voluntary projects and their ratings, and Article 6 policy.
Carbon pricing now covers around a quarter of global emissions. Compliance schemes - emissions trading systems and carbon taxes - regulate carbon for hundreds of large emitters across 50+ jurisdictions. The voluntary market sits alongside, with projects in Africa generating credits sold globally.
Canopy tracks both. Compliance side: where schemes exist, what they cost, when deadlines fall. Voluntary side: African projects, project-level ratings (C-CARBON), and policy infrastructure under Article 6.

Sources. Compliance scheme data is drawn from ICAP, the World Bank Carbon Pricing Dashboard, and individual regulator publications. Voluntary project data is drawn from the Verra registry. Cross-references are kept to authoritative public sources only.
Update cadence. Scheme detail (jurisdiction, coverage, sectors, regulated tax rates) is reviewed when regulators reform the underlying programme - typically a handful of times per year. The compliance calendar is updated 4-5 times per year as deadlines are confirmed. Project data is refreshed as Verra publishes registry updates.
What is not here. Live ETS prices. Allowance auction prices change daily and require a paid feed (ICAP, Refinitiv, S&P Platts) to stay current. Headline prices shown in scheme detail are approximate spot indications updated periodically - not financial data, not for trading decisions. For real-time prices, use the providers above.
This hub and the nature finance hub. This one is about the carbon market itself: who prices carbon, at what, and under what rules. The nature finance hub is about the money that reaches African conservation, of which carbon credits are one source. C-CARBON appears on both because it belongs to both; its ratings live at C-CARBON.
Scope. Compliance scheme tracking is global. Voluntary project, C-CARBON, and Article 6 layers are Africa-focused, in line with Canopy's primary scope. Where the global compliance map shows Africa as mostly white space, that is the story - few African jurisdictions have priced carbon directly so far, though South Africa's tax (2019) is one of the broader-scope tax regimes globally.
