Where it ranks

The Canopy Global 1000 ranks the world’s land protected areas by conservation value: how irreplaceable the species they hold are, how connected they are to other protected land, and how intact they are, weighted by size. Plant data is being added to the ranking, so both versions are shown side by side. Neither is the final word.

Without plants, Kerinci Seblat ranks 29 of 1,000. With plants it ranks 92. It stays in the top 300 either way, which is why it is here.

Published management assessments

Management-effectiveness ratings published outside Canopy, each on its publisher’s own scale. They are not PACE scores, some are self-assessments, and different methods and years are never converted into one another or ranked together.

Indonesian national METT (KSDAE), 2017: 68 percent, on a 0 to 100 scale.

Assessor: Unit self-assessment under Ditjen KSDAE METT guidance, values set by Director General decree; individual assessors not named. Overall Nilai METT only. The archived file is unsigned and its header number is a template leftover, so no decree number is cited; year taken from its title and recital and matched by the 2017 column of the Dit KK 2015 to 2019 effectiveness report.

Scale: Published overall Nilai METT index (Indonesian national METT adaptation) from a Ditjen KSDAE decree annex or an official Ditjen KSDAE statistics or performance report table. Component scores not retained; no conversion to other METT variants. Source: Ditjen KSDAE 2017 management-effectiveness values for 397 conservation areas (unsigned file); Lampiran, row TN Kerinci Seblat, column Nilai METT. Retrieved 2026-10-05. Unit name and function (taman nasional (TN)) match the cohort entity in the same province; one row per unit.

GEF METT reported as a percentage in a project evaluation, 2021: 79 percent, on a 0 to 100 scale.

Assessor: METT scorecards repeated by national park management with project support; figures supplied to the terminal evaluation team. December 2021 repeat of the METT scorecard; the evaluation reports scores on a percentage basis (Figure 14).

Scale: METT score expressed as a percentage, as published in a GEF project evaluation. Project-run assessment; not comparable across projects without checking the METT version. Source: UNDP-GEF Sumatran Tiger Project terminal evaluation; Paragraph 174, page 92. Retrieved 2026-10-05. Named target national park of the project; the evaluation lists the five target parks individually (Kerinci Seblat appears as Kerinci National Park).

Indonesian national METT (KSDAE), 2019: 72 percent, on a 0 to 100 scale.

Assessor: Unit self-assessment under Ditjen KSDAE METT guidance, compiled by Ditjen KSDAE; individual assessors not named. Overall value only, printed under a Nilai % header. Scanned table read at 300 dpi.

Scale: Published overall Nilai METT index (Indonesian national METT adaptation) from a Ditjen KSDAE decree annex or an official Ditjen KSDAE statistics or performance report table. Component scores not retained; no conversion to other METT variants. Source: Dit KK report on management-effectiveness results 2015 to 2019; Rekap Nilai annex (PDF p. 57), row Kerinci Seblat, column 2019. Retrieved 2026-10-05. Unit name and function (taman nasional (TN)) match the cohort entity; one row per unit.

Indonesian national METT (KSDAE), 2022: 74 percent, on a 0 to 100 scale.

Assessor: Unit self-assessment under Ditjen KSDAE METT guidance, compiled by Ditjen KSDAE; individual assessors not named. Overall value only, unit not printed in the table; same 0 to 100 Nilai METT index as the decree values.

Scale: Published overall Nilai METT index (Indonesian national METT adaptation) from a Ditjen KSDAE decree annex or an official Ditjen KSDAE statistics or performance report table. Component scores not retained; no conversion to other METT variants. Source: Statistik Ditjen KSDAE 2022, effectiveness index table; Tabel 17 (printed p. 144), row TN Kerinci Seblat, column Nilai METT. Retrieved 2026-10-05. Unit name and function (taman nasional (TN)) match the cohort entity; one row per unit.

Irrecoverable carbon

64.2 million tonnes of carbon inside the boundary is irrecoverable: if it were lost, it could not be recovered by 2050.

Forest loss, 2001 to 2024

13,605 km² of the area was forest in 2000, 100% of it. 792.4 km² of that forest was lost between 2001 and 2024, 5.8% of the 2000 cover.

Forest means at least 30% tree canopy in 2000. Loss counts any clearing, including fire and natural disturbance, not only deforestation.
